IC Information
Character name: Hope Minett
Character canon: Invisible Hand (OC)
Canon point: After Darkest Night
Physical Description:
Hope is a 13-year-old girl who is somewhat short for her age, with light-colored, almost white hair and tanned skin. She usually dresses in simple, solid-colored clothing, which tends to have a worn look to it.
As Echidna, she appears to be a fully grown adult, although her hair and skin stay the same color. Her hair becomes much more elaborate and curly, and gains several black roses in it as well. Her outfits in this form tend more towards elegant, fancy dresses, usually in darker tones.
About the Character:
Hope comes from a poorer neighborhood, and does her best to keep her chin up despite it. She has never been considered as a candidate to be a magical girl, and her neighborhood has been written off by the Elder Magi. So when an injured monster escaped there, they declined to send any magical girls to finish it off. Simply letting it die off there was seen as preferable. Who cares what it does to poor people in between that?
Unfortunately for the Elder Magi, Hope found the monster. And her first thought was that it looked like it was in pain. And her second thought was that she wanted to ease the pain. Unconsciously, she awakened her own magical powers-those of empathy. And for the first time, the monster recognized a human as more than a moving source of food. It allowed Hope to take care of it and slowly heal its wounds. As time went on, she slowly started to pick up other stray monsters-and then started to realize a disturbing pattern among some of them. They all claimed to once have been familiars who were forced to turn into this form and attack their contracted children, no matter how much they loved them. Slowly, she began to realize the truth behind the world of magic, and became determined to tear down this structure that hurt human and familiar and monster alike.
At first, she worried about the fact that caring for a monster might make her evil, and then decided to try and go full-force in that direction, embracing a "dark" magical girl form and the name Echidna, the mother of monsters. After she slowly realized that really wasn't her, she chilled out somewhat, but kept the "evil" aesthetic that she found she enjoyed.
During this time, Hope would meet up with Jailbreak, an ex-magical girl and black market dealer. While at first she tried to recruit the other girl to join her on the "dark side," eventually she settled down about that. She would still enjoy the aesthetic, though, and came to see Jail as sort of an older sister figure. And they would eventually be drawn into the dealings of Lighthouse, a group of mages who knew the truth behind magic and monsters and were determined to fight back.
Hope enjoyed her time in Lighthouse greatly, especially befriending the thaumivore Arc, who was also a great friend to her own thaumivore companions. However, eventually would come the time of Blackest Night, when Lighthouse finally went to face down the Hand once and for all.
Hope ended up having a personal confrontation with Congressman Millard, the one who had started the program to drive injured monsters to poorer neighborhoods. Despite his attempt to use his compelling voice her, her monsters naturally wouldn't listen to her orders when she was under his control, and tore him apart themselves.
...and then after they won, Lily, one of their friends, tried to pass herself off as the final villain and get them to kill her. Luckily, they were able to talk her down.
With the Hand gone, Hope was able to focus more on helping out her community directly, rebuilding what had been damaged. Still, she was willing to remain on call for the rest of Lighthouse to summon her if they needed her help hunting down the remnants of the Hand.
Hope is a very sweet, friendly girl. Unlike most of Lighthouse, she was never formally made a mage, giving her a very different view on monsters. She is more empathetic towards them by default than most of her fellow members, and likely to try conversation before combat. She's also not a frontline fighter in the first place, preferring to support her fellow mages and her thaumivore friends.
She also distrusts authority quite heavily. The more legal power someone has and the older they are, the shadier they come off to her. This comes both from her growing up in a poorer neighborhood that got little assistance and from learning the truth behind the Hand. She definitely gets along better with teens and young adults, although she does trust most of the adults she grew up with.
In unfamiliar situations, she might default to her Echidna identity, one she has carefully constructed. She is slightly less inhibited in that form, although it's mostly a psychological thing than an actual effect of her transformation. She's become somewhat used to using bluffs when she first meets someone and trying to discern their character from there. Although with the defeat of the Hand that habit has mostly gone away, being thrown into an unfamiliar situation like the dungeons is likely going to bring it back.
Character abilities:
-Transformation: Hope can transform into Echidna, making her look almost completely different and giving her generally greater endurance and physical capabilities.
-Empathy: Hope can feel the emotions of others and project her emotions onto them, as well as project the emotions of others. She's more likely to use this ability with thaumivores/nonhumans, but it can work on humans as well. She tends not to use it offensively, mostly just using it as a way to sense others or calm down panicking monsters.
-Biokinesis: Mostly used for healing, it allows her to change the physical body of any creature she's touching. There's more tolerance for messing up with monsters, although she could use it on people if she really wanted.
-Attention avoidance: Allows Hope and a group of people close to her to not be noticed by anyone else. It won't fool automated security systems, although it will work through camera feeds and the like. It works somewhat better with thaumivores due to their natural attention-averting abilities.
Inventory:
-An extremely comfy chair, looted from the hall of Congress. Originally belonged to Milliard. It's hers now.
-A book of photos of her family and friends from Lighthouse.
-"Bucky" the thaumivore, about the height of an adult on all fours. Has the ability to chew through anything inorganic in one bite. Likes both giving and receiving piggyback rides.
